==== Body
pmcWe wish to thank Drs Lui and Lan for their letter regarding our paper.1 We agree that knowing more about the pregnant patient's medical history would be useful and noted this as a limitation of our study. Utilizing a large population database, we were unable to query clinical charts and therefore assess for the presence or absence of maternal congenital heart disease. Furthermore, we did not have access to a prior history of miscarriage or stillbirth in the pregnant patient. The ability to follow serial pregnancies with this database allowed us to collect data on sequential pregnancies that did not result in miscarriage or stillbirth, and we were able to demonstrate that there is an association between preeclampsia and offspring congenital heart disease that persists beyond a single pregnancy. The letter from Drs Lui and Lan adds a useful discussion to the limitations of using a large population database that covers multiple years. Our hope is that future studies will further elucidate the association between preeclampsia and congenital heart disease by utilizing a prospective study design, having complete access to the medical chart, and evaluating the placentas both during pregnancy and postpartum.
