Building off a successful 2023 in-person congress, the cord blood community is looking forward to continuing our conversations through the live interactions and exchange of ideas at the 2024 in-person program.

The scientific and technical/educational planning committees are looking forward to welcoming the attendees from around the world to view the accepted abstracts for 2024. This year 33 abstracts will be presented, submitted by investigators in over 30 research centers and banks in Andorra, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Finland, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, the United States, and Ukraine.

Our Abstract Review Committee was excited to review the high quality abstracts that were submitted this year that cover a broad range of topics including clinical trials, cord blood bank management, preclinical studies, perinatal tissue and therapies, and cord blood collection, manufacturing, and cell engineering. The clinical trials abstracts included both hematopoietic stem cell therapy and regenerative medicine. Other abstracts describe strategies for banking to increase sustainability, increase efficiency and improve quality. In the preclinical studies, subjects include methodologies for cord blood expansion, research on cord tissue derived MSCs, and cord blood cells in brain injuries.

The committee is pleased to announce that three submissions have been chosen for the Best Abstract Awards with one regarding clinical trials, one in pre-clinical studies, and one in banking/process development/technical.

Srividhya Senthil from Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital will present results of a multicenter experience evaluating the relationship between cyclosporine exposure and time to disease relapse in a large cohort of pediatric AML patients receiving a T-replete cord blood transplant.

Wouter Van’t Hof from the Cleveland Cord Blood Center will present data on improved engraftment and overall survival for single cord blood transplant performed with IND and licensed cord blood units versus pre-2012 IND cord blood units.

James Ropa from Indiana University will present data showing that HSCs/HPCs enriched for dehydrogenase and cell cycle associated genes yield better repopulating cell frequency.

Recipients of the Best Abstract Awards will give oral presentations on Saturday September 7, followed by a Meet the Authors Poster Session and Reception at which the presenting authors for all abstracts will be at their posters.

We encourage all conference attendees to capitalize on the opportunity to meet the authors and discuss their innovative approaches for advancing our field. We are delighted to see so much progress in the field and can’t wait to see what the future holds!
